Architecture for Identity, Local Economy and the Coastal Landscape
The Angelmó Market, a cultural and tourist icon of Puerto Montt, is undergoing a comprehensive transformation process driven by the Municipality, which seeks to revitalize its infrastructure and strengthen its role as a center of local economy and civic gathering. This process is part of a series of initiatives, including the public tender for the market’s improvement, which involves the demolition of deteriorated structures and the design of a new facility that responds to the community’s contemporary needs and to the site’s geographic context.

Siting Strategy: A Dialogue with the Sea and the City
The architectural proposal is organized around two linear halls that open toward the sea, establishing a visual and functional connection with the maritime setting. These halls house cocinerías (traditional seafood eateries), restaurants and market spaces, highlighting local cuisine based on seafood products. Between the two structures, a multi-program central courtyard is proposed as a space for gathering and connection, facilitating interaction among vendors, visitors and the community at large.

Vernacular Architecture and Sustainability
The design draws inspiration from the traditional architecture of southern Chile, using wooden structures that evoke the shapes of the region’s old palafitos (stilt houses) and boats. This choice not only reinforces the market’s cultural identity but also promotes sustainable construction practices suited to the local climate. The incorporation of local materials and traditional building techniques seeks to generate a sense of belonging and historical continuity.

Integration of Maritime Infrastructure
The project includes the addition of small-craft docks, facilitating direct access for fishermen to the market and strengthening the value chain of seafood products. This infrastructure seeks to create a virtuous circle that benefits both local producers and consumers, promoting the local economy and the sustainability of marine resources.

Community Participation and Tourism Development
The revitalization of the Angelmó Market is being carried out with a participatory approach, involving vendors, fishermen and the community at large in the design and planning process. In addition, the aim is to enhance the market’s tourist appeal, integrating it into the city’s economic and cultural development strategies. The improvement of the market’s infrastructure and its culinary and cultural offerings will help consolidate Puerto Montt as a tourist destination of national and international significance.
This project represents an opportunity to reimagine the Angelmó Market as a space that honors its historical and cultural legacy while adapting to contemporary needs and challenges, strengthening its role as an engine of economic and social development for the region.
